Who cares about being normal when it’s so much more fun to be yourself?

Los Angeles, CA – August 29, 2019 – “A witty, moving, unashamed love letter to boybands and fandom,” wrote Set the Tape.

TriCoast Entertainment announces U.S. distribution of Jessica Leski’s documentary, I USED TO BE NORMAL: A BOYBAND FANGIRL STORY, arriving on digital platforms Fall 2019.

Directed by five-time nominated director, Jessica Leski (The Ball), I USED TO BE NORMAL: A BOYBAND FANGIRL STORY is a documentary exploring the joys, innocence and awkwardness of being a teenager and fangirl, whatever the era. “I USED TO BE NORMAL is a rousing and heartwarming account of the universal need to connect with something larger than ourselves. It inspires and encourages fans of all ages and genders to embrace positivity wherever they can find it, in a world that so often discourages it. It asks: Who cares about being normal when it’s so much more fun to be yourself? Keep screaming about the things that you love,” wrote Birth.Movies.Death.

I USED TO BE NORMAL: A BOYBAND FANGIRL STORY is an intimate coming-of-age story about a group of diverse women from across the globe whose lives are radically changed by their deep love of boybands. By investigating the crucial role music has played in female lives; Leski’s doc spans three generations of pop culture – from The Beatles, to the Backstreet Boys, to Take That, and One Direction.

Exploring the creativity, dedication and influence of a fangirl, I USED TO BE NORMAL: A BOYBAND FANGIRL STORY follows four women who must navigate the challenges of relationships, family, sexuality, and faith, while constantly grappling with all the problems and contradictions that are part of being in love with a boyband. Filmed over four years, Leski’s team interviewed worldwide fangirls (aged 13 to 65), songwriters, adolescent psychologists and even former boyband members, while compiling archival footage, like home movies and animation to take you back to the fun, fantasy and feelings of your teenage years.

From Over Here Productions, I USED TO BE NORMAL: A BOYBAND FANGIRL STORY world premiered at Canada’s 2018 Hot Docs International Documentary Festival and in the USA at 2019 Fantastic Fest. While circling the festival circuit worldwide, the fangirl doc received several acclaimed nominations, including ‘People’s Choice Awards (Best Documentary)’ and ‘Documentary Achievement Award (Best Documentary).

“This is a fantastic movie whether you’ve ever liked boybands or not. We’ve all got musical skeletons in our closets, bands we liked and don’t admit it anymore […], and it’s nice to see these four fans shout their fandom from the rooftops,” wrote Film Inquiry.

TriCoast Entertainment will exclusively release Leski’s award-winning doc onto various digital streaming platforms beginning Sept. 17th (Amazon, InDemand, DirecTV, AT&T, FlixFling, Vudu, FANDANGO, Sling/Dish).
