Elevated Environmental Corporation Leads Ocracoke Island School Demolition Project

GREENSBORO, N.C. – October 28, 2020 – Known for the most comprehensive environmental, demolition, and industrial services in the Southeast, Elevated Environmental Corporation has announced it will manage the partial demolition of the school on Ocracoke Island in North Carolina, which was damaged by Hurricane Dorian in 2019.

The company plans to preserve and repurpose as much of the school as possible. Non-historical buildings will be demolished only, while separating the school’s old gym from the new one. Both are currently attached. To preserve the structural integrity of the new gym structure, special crane rigging and a careful demolition process will be used. With Norman Gower as site superintendent, the demolition services company plans to complete the project in 45 days, barring inclement weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

The company is also addressing several challenges associated with the project. Locational concerns such as Ocracoke being an isolated island and the only logistical means to remove building materials by ferry are key factors in the project. At the same time, ferry routes are being dredged to address shoaling in the area, creating challenges in scheduling and implementing a process to transport materials.

In September 2019, Hurricane Dorian trapped several people in their homes on the island. Several were airlifted to the mainland while Highway 12, the main thoroughfare on Ocracoke, was heavily damaged. At its peak, Dorian was a Category 5 hurricane with 185 mph winds when it struck the Abaco Islands in the Bahamas.
