Fight For Life Club wants to give Mexican children needing liver transplants a second chance at life through donations from the kind-hearted public.

The odds of getting a liver transplant are disheartening. Research has shown that there are more people in need of a liver transplant than there are donated livers. This was something Jose Manuel Cadena discovered almost too late. In 2020, Manuel was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis due to an autoimmune syndrome and needed a liver transplant to save his life.

In his search for proper medical treatment, he discovered that his native Mexico lacked transplant programs and infrastructure for liver transplants.  Not willing to accept defeat, he expanded his search to include international options. The Mayo Clinic and other clinics in Spain were considered.

Manuel’s search put him in contact with Dr. Manuel Rodriguez-Davalos, a liver transplant surgeon specializing in pediatric cases, who referred him to Intermountain Medical Center and Liver Clinic. Dr. Manuel was not new to such cases. He and Joshue Covarrubias from NOIS Foundation already founded a program in Mexico to help children with biliary atresia, a condition that 1 in 30,000 newborns have. Sadly only 3% to 8% of them survive due to lack of diagnosis, financial resources, and, worse, lack of healthcare professionals with the proper training to perform the surgery.

After attending the clinic and finishing transplant protocol, Manuel was listed in 2021 and had a successful surgery on September 30 2021. The transplant was performed by master surgeons Alan Contreras and Shiro Fujita.

During Manuel’s search for a cure, he had met people who sorely needed liver transplant surgeries but didn’t have proper diagnostic, medical treatment or financial resources to save their lives. His second chance at life filled him with the desire to help as many who are not as fortunate as him. In October 2021, Manuel founded Fight For Life Club to actualize this dream.

Fight For Life Club is a nonprofit institution that focuses primarily on providing financial support to low income persons who don’t have medical insurance to pay for their liver transplant surgery. The organization also goes one step further to train healthcare professionals that want to specialize in liver transplant surgery. This is in addition to promoting cultural and educational campaigns on organ donation and transplantation.

On February 14, Fight For Life Club initiated a campaign to help 2-year-old Fatima, its first patient, get a life-saving liver transplant. The awareness campaign went viral and even attracted the attention of popular figures like Fernanda Familiar, Paola Rojas, and Joaquin Lopez-Doriga. As donations poured into the fundraising campaign, a team of healthcare experts from Intermountain Medical Center Liver Clinic also volunteered their time and talent to support a Mexican medical team during the complex living donor transplant.

On April 15, another chance arose to help yet another child. Three-year-old Valeria who lives in Guadalajara, Mexico recently had a blood loss episode that could have ended her life due to portal hypertension. She urgently requires a surgery that would prevent her from needing a liver transplant in the future. Fortunately, the team that would perform Fatima’s surgery has the special ability to also work on Valeria.

A special plea for help

Fight For Life Club is asking for the support of the general public to raise the extra funds needed to save both Fatima and Valeria. Both surgeries can be performed on the exceptional medical team’s mission to Mexico. The organization specially entreats the public to please donate whatever they can so two promising young lives can be saved. All kinds of support are welcomed and appreciated.

Donations can be made at the Fight For Life Club’s website.
