New Drug Use Analysis Shows British Colombia Participants Report Extremely High Drug Use

Results from a new self-report project led by the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA) was published in July 2022. Among the key takeaways, data collected between 2019 and 2021 indicates that methamphetamine, amphetamine and cocaine and crack were used more often than any othersubstance across all regions analyzed.

Looking at the results from across British Colombia specifically, Inspire Change Wellness, a Vancouver-based drug and alcohol rehab centre for men, aims to emphasize the dangerous trend observed across the province. Out of all project participants from British Colombia, over half (62 per cent) were men, the majority aged between 18 and 64 years old, with 64% reporting a daily frequency of drug use.

‘This self-reporting project by the CCSA is extremely important and the most recent findings provide us with a snapshot of a much bigger problem we are dealing with across Canada. Unregulated substances have always been an issue, however the added challenge here is that illegal distributors continue to change the contents of the drugs which in return, has an impact on potency and overall quality. Even more so as everyone is dealing with a cost-of-living crisis and struggles to make ends meet. Cutting drugs or replacing contents with cheaper and therefore, more dangerous, more addictive compounds is expected to happen,‘ warned a key Inspire Change Wellness spokesperson in response to the survey findings.

The report also showed that, across participants from British Colombia, methamphetamine and amphetamine, including crystal meth use was over 73 per cent, the highest of all substances analyzed and in line with trends observed across all the provinces analyzed. ‘While we can clearly see that methamphetamine and amphetamine is at staggering rates across all eight provinces, one cannot overlook the fact that British Colombia has the highest usage of them all, with Edmonton coming in second at 58 per cent which is still significantly lower. This should raise a lot of flags as we are just trying to escape a pandemic and heading for a meth epidemic in our very own homes. Addiction and rehab services are now more important than ever, and we must continue to collect this critical data in order to build effective strategies and responses‘.
