Gary Rhule offers tips on recovering from Mental Illness in “Sailing on Broken Pieces”

Board-certified Internal Medicine physician, Gary Rhule, offers a comprehensive guide on dealing with mental illness in his book titled “Sailing on Broken Pieces: Essential Survival Skills for Recovery from Mental Illness.”

“Sailing on Broken Pieces: Essential Survival Skills for Recovery from Mental Illness” has been described by some as Gary’s way of helping the millions of caregivers and people affected by mental illness to regain their lives and to recover. The book is unique in that “Sailing on Broken Pieces” is told from the triple perspective of a sibling, caregiver and emergency room doctor who treats people with mental illness in the emergency room and copes with the same concerns at home.

Globally, mental health conditions are common. In the U.S., one in five persons is living with a mental health diagnosis. Family caregivers are an extension of the health care system because the majority of persons living with a mental health diagnosis live at home in the community. Unfortunately, there are not enough resources to help persons living with a mental health diagnosis. Likewise, there are insufficient resources for family caregivers. Current statistics report that 65 million Americans are family caregivers for persons living with a mental health diagnosis. Therefore, it is imperative to address the unmet needs of this special yet under-served population. Gary Rhule tackles these issues in the release of “Sailing on Broken Pieces”.

The book provides strategies and insights on how to cope while providing support for a family member. Gary pours his years of experience and wealth of knowledge as an emergency room doctor where many persons are affected by physical illness as well as mental illness into every page of the book.

Described as “Mental Illness 101: Tips to succeed in the fast lane of family dynamics,” the book reiterates the author’s passion for improving the mental health system, removing the stigma of mental illness, and closing gaps in health disparity.

Dr. Gary is not only a trained doctor dealing with patients in the hospital but also has a brother diagnosed with schizophrenia. After an extended stay at a state psychiatric institution, his brother was released and Gary ended his training, to return home to Connecticut to give his brother Sam shelter, and to be his caregiver.

The book has already started to receive accolades from different readers across the globe. “Enjoyed this book as one who can relate to the healthcare maze. The “tip boxes” are really accurate and helpful for anyone to navigate the system and take ownership for the most desirable direction,” says Janet on Amazon.

“Sailing on Broken Pieces: Essential Survival Skills for Recovery from Mental Illness” is currently available on Amazon for readers across the globe.
