November 11th, 2019 – The 3rd Annual Coronation Ceremony of Miss Africa America Pageant was held successfully on Saturday, October 12th, 2019. The venue was 3903 Broadway, Oakland, CA, and the host for the red carpet and the evening was popular model Tekla Rudwin. This year’s Queen is Yvonne Osse, a fashion brand ambassador as well as part of the US Army Reserve as Intelligence Specialist.
This year’s pageant came to life with some celebrity performers. There were live performances by Samba & Band. The official DJ was Kwammaster along with MC Soco. Gracing the occasion were celebrity guests, the Ghanian super model Vigilant Sutherlin and Ugandan artist Saava Karim Nsubuga.
Yvonne Osse, the new Miss Africa America 2019/2020, was studying journalism in Kenya when she moved to the US to enroll for a nursing course. She then followed her brother’s success in the military and decided to join the US Army as a medic. She served for four years, and then re-calibrated her career. She joined the Reserves, and enrolled at FIDM to pursue fashion merchandising and marketing, her passion since childhood. She is currently setting up an online African headwrap brand.
“As Miss Africa America, I want to empower and create awareness about the wounded veterans and their families. The Army Wounded Warrior (AW2) program was established in 2014 to assist and advocate for them. By creating awareness, coming together and acknowledging our soldiers, we have the power to change the warriors live,” says Yvonne.
The decision on who will wear the crown was made by a judges panel comprising: Queenkay, author and speaker; Zeny Durano, CEO Image by Zeny; Daniel Olusegun Akeni, CEO, Manager and Director; Lylian Muttakyamba, Miss Wine County; Rowland Ampimah, business banking specialist.
Miss Africa America is unlike any other beauty competition. The pageant stands for a vision of empowerment and growth for women who carry African heritage or a part of it. The contestants aim to not only be known for their looks and personality, but also take on positions of leadership around the world.
The Miss Africa America Pageant team is motivated by the desire to uncover the true essence of a woman, which is her sense of purpose and direction, and giving them the tools to reach the highest purpose in life.
“With platforms that embrace humanitarian goals, scholarships and more, these African women are motivated to make meaningful contributions to society giving windows of opportunities to members of our communities to be part of something noble,” says Oumie Garba, CEO & Founder of Miss Africa America Pageant.
The team at Miss Africa America understands the value of finding leaders that can make a difference in our communities. That’s the true aim of the pageant -to find beauty, talent, and the embodiment of wisdom in these young women.
