What is the difference between a 2-pin button switch and a 4-pin button switch?

The difference between a two-pin push button and a four-pin push button lies in the number of pins and their functions.

In most cases, a four-pin push button is used for illuminated push  buttons or multi-contact push buttons. The additional pins in a four-pin button are usually used for powering an LED light or controlling an additional set of switch contacts. To differentiate whether the pins are for powering an LED or controlling additional contacts, people can examine the appearance of the button to see if it has a light or check the markings next to the pins (pins labeled with “-” and “+” are for LED power, while others are for additional contacts).

There are also other push button types with different functions. For example:

a. Three-pin push button: This type of button has one common pin, one normally closed pin, and one normally open pin. When people connect the wires to the common pin and normally open pin, the button will be normally closed and make contact when pressed. When they connect the wires to the common pin and normally closed pin, the button will be normally open and break contact when pressed.

b. Six-pin push button: This is essentially a double-function three-pin button. The extra pins provide additional control options or connection possibilities.Another scenario is a two-pin button that has both an illuminated light and additional control contacts.

c. Five-pin push button: Usually, a five-pin button is a three-pin button with LED.
