YOMISMA Launches “The Chiapas” Signature Kaftan Dress With Embroidered Sleeves

Yomisma introduces its signature Kaftan dress with embroidered sleeves called “The Chiapas”, showcasing environmentally-friendly materials and supporting a community of women artisans in the Chiapas Highlands, Mexico.

Yomisma, a clothing brand committed to sustainability and empowering women, will launch their signature kaftan dress with embroidered sleeves on August 1, 2023, each one of a kind and carrying a unique QR code and number for authentication. Their waitlist is now open on their website. This is the first garment in their artisan collection series. These small-batch, big-impact Kaftan dresses were crafted with care and are available in a variety of colors and are made with environmentally friendly materials.“The Chiapas” kaftans are not only fashionably conscious but also socially impactful as they feature exquisite embroidery handmade by a community of women artisans in the Tsotsil community of Chiapas, Mexico.

The intricate embroidery is created using a hand loom, a technique deeply rooted in Mayan heritage. By supporting the purchase of these garments, customers contribute to the preservation of this ancestral art form, while the women artisans are compensated with fair hourly wages for their 9-11 hours of work per sleeve.

Yomisma’s partnership with this community has extended over several months, allowing the women to earn income that supports their families and pass down this cherished craft to future generations.  “I started working on the hand loom when I was 11 years old.  When working with Yomisma, we felt happy because we can teach our children the techniques to keep our cultural heritage alive for generations and generations, just like our mothers and our grandmothers taught us,” says Cristina Perez Gomez, a 27-year-old artisan born and raised in the Chiapas region.

Yomisma takes pride in respecting the cultural significance of the embroidery designs, which are registered and considered sacred to the region. According to Victoria Contreras, Yomisma Founder and Designer, “Ancestral designs are often mimicked without credit in fashion. We want to be clear that these embroidery designs were created and registered by this community.  This particular embroidery design belongs to San Andrés Larraínzar.” By purchasing “The Chiapas” kaftans, customers not only celebrate the Mayan indigenous ancestral designs but also provide financial support to the women in the Chiapas Highlands. The unique color combinations chosen by Yomisma for this collaboration have invigorated the community, instilling a sense of value and pride as they work to create beautiful pieces that represent their cultural identity This partnership came to fruition when Contreras met Koua founder Erika Alvarez who introduced Contreras to this talented community of women and has been helping steward the relationship.

This initiative is a part of Yomisma’s commitment to the handmade industry, which plays a significant role in the livelihoods of many artisans worldwide. By ensuring fair wages and celebrating traditional craftsmanship, Yomisma aims to uplift these artisans and create a more sustainable fashion industry. What’s more, Yomisma aspires to produce artisan collections on a broad level impacting millions of artisans’ lives.

Yomisma has other initiatives that are focused on empowering Women one of which is their partnership with World Relief which enables Yomisma to employ refugees with tailoring skills, offering them opportunities to create accessories from leftover fabric, further promoting a no-waste approach.

Yomisma believes that clothes that tell a story are the ones that hold value over time, aligning with their ultimate sustainability goal. By wearing “The Chiapas” kaftan dress with embroidered sleeves, individuals not only make a fashion statement but also contribute to a positive social impact and empower women in communities around the world.
