Dear Hannah, You will never believe my news. After almost despairing of finding the right man (perhaps I was too particular, as some said), I am getting married. No, I can’t say I was too particular because otherwise I would already be married to William, which is its own tale, and never have met Jacob… Emily DeGroot thrives on secret letters to and from her runaway sister Hannah who left her affluent home in New York, married a hessian mercenary, and lives in the wilds of Pennsylvania in 1798. Emily’s Story, the sequel to Letters to Emily, chronicles the same year from Emily’s perspective. Emily faces an entirely different set of challenges: yellow fever, a long harsh winter, and the perfect suitor whom she does not love. Will Emily’s circumstances grow her from a spoiled wealthy young girl to a resilient and independent woman, or will the tests that life throws at her crush her? Fans of Janette Oke will love this new sweet historical romance.
Miriam Ilgenfritz lives on a farm established before the Revolutionary War, on one side of a mountain in Dornsife, Pennsylvania. Her house is 170 years old and sometimes living in it feels that way. She and her husband Mark have raised 16 kids in this house; but since this is Amish country, she doesn’t stand out all that much at the grocery store.
The kids turned out pretty well, considering that they didn’t have rooms of their own or expensive summer camps, and most have now gone off to do interesting things with their lives.
Miriam began writing while the kids were young as a distraction from the ever-present laundry pile and discovered that it makes her happy. She plans to continue and is working on a memoir about her childhood in Congo with her missionary parents. She tends her greenhouse plants and her irises, and when her kids come back home, they make Celtic music together; with Miriam on the flute. She wishes she played the cello and has even gone so far as to own one. She raises basset hounds, and because she is a woman who writes, she has a cat to supervise her work.
Amazon reviews:
“I really enjoyed reading this book! I liked the setting of New York because I live in New York! The story is original and the characters are relatable and genuine! Yellow fever ravages the city, leaving Emily feeling cut off from her sisters. She experiences sudden losses that propel her toward maturity. There is a silver lining to the story! She meets a young man and they fall in love! She also makes new friends! The ending was perfect! I highly recommend this book!” – Jeanette Durkin
“This was a very well written story and one that you just wanted to keep going to see what would happen next. I know others will enjoy it as well.” – Barbara Beechy
“Very fulfilling. Couldn’t put down. Had to see what Emily was going to do next.” – Carl L.
