Nov 22, 2023 – Hockley, TX – DRP Chemicals had an LC50 Acute Toxicity Evaluation performed on its DRP Accelerator™ wastewater treatment product and the results demonstrate that the product is clearly safe to use in wastewater treatment applications where the chemical may eventually end up in streams where fish are present. The test was conducted for DRP Chemicals by EnviroScience, Inc, and independent 3rd-party lab.
LC50 Test Result
The 96-hour LC50 for DRP Accelerator™ — performed with the freshwater fish Pimephales promelas (commonly known as fathead minnows) — was determined to be 5,221 mg/L, the equivalent of 5,221 parts per million (ppm).
This level is far above any recommended treatment levels for wastewater plants or lagoons. In fact, the highest recommended treatment would typically be a loading dose of around 100 ppm, which is less than 2% of the LC50 concentration. Recommended ongoing treatment levels (the level after the initial loading dose) are well under 1% of the LC50.
Additional Test to Confirm Safety
To further confirm the safety of DRP Accelerator™ for wildlife and the environment, DRP Chemicals requested that EnviroScience, Inc test the toxicity of DRP Accelerator at 2,000 mg/L (2,000 ppm) – about 20 times any recommended treatment levels — and it was determined there was no measurable lethal toxicity at that treatment level. Simply put, no fathead minnows died while in the water treated at that level of concentration.
It is important to also note that if the chemical reaches a waterway containing wildlife, it is immediately diluted to a minuscule fraction of its already-safe concentration level.
DRP Chemicals’ VP of Operations & Development, Alan Rein, said of the LC50 test result, “We’re very glad to have the official LC50 number. It confirms what we’ve always known, and that’s that our product is safe for use in applications where it might end up in waterways where wildlife is present. The safety of people, animals, and the environment are extremely important to us so we’ve always focused on developing products that are non-toxic and safe.”
Demonstrating Safety for Customers
Earlier in 2023, the DRP Accelerator™ was awarded the NSF L1 designation which means the product was determined to be so safe it can be used around food production (even though the company does not list any food-related uses of the product). DRP Chemicals hopes that the combination of the NSF L1 designation and the LC50 test is solid proof to their current and prospective customers that they can rest assured that DRP Accelerator™ is safe and risk-free for their treatment systems, people, wildlife, and the environment.
How DRP Accelerator™ Works
DRP Accelerator™ is a new type of biological wastewater treatment used to eliminate odors, reduce solids, and eliminate the production of dangerous H2S gases in wastewater applications.
While most biological treatments are a mixture of various bacteria and/or enzymes, DRP Accelerator™ contains no bacteria or enzymes. DRP Accelerator™ is a bio-accelerator and works by multiplying the reproduction of the naturally occurring aerobic and anaerobic bacteria in wastewater by up to 40 times which creates enough bacteria to clean built-up and inbound organic solids up and eliminate odors at treatment plants and lift stations. H2S gas production is eliminated in anaerobic environments because the reaction created by DRP Accelerator™ in water produces an element that is preferred by the bacteria over sulfides, which eliminates the sulfate reduction process so H2S is not produced.
DRP Accelerator™ is used in municipal wastewater plants and lift stations, livestock manure lagoons, and even commercial and residential septic systems to clear organic solids and eliminate odors. For the oil and gas industry, it has also demonstrated effectiveness for cleaning paraffin in downhole applications to increase oil production.
DRP Chemicals is a producer of wastewater treatment chemicals based in Hockley, TX. The company services municipal and commercial markets with products based on DRP Accelerator™. Using the same core formula, the company’s consumer-focused division, Dr. Pooper, provides safe and effective cleaning treatments for septic systems.
