eTUNNLE Inc Develops ‘Fingerprint Authentication Smart Card’ Technology with User Self-Registration Support

The biometric security company eTUNNEL (represented by Kim Young-guk and Lee Sang-joon) recently announced on the 21st that they have developed a fingerprint authentication smart card technology that allows users to register their fingerprints directly.

Users can register their fingerprints on a financial-type fingerprint authentication smart card (credit or debit card) using this technology at home or at work. The company says this technology can significantly enhance convenience while elevating financial security to the next level.

According to eTUNNEL, credit cards are being issued at a rate of 20 million annually in South Korea alone. Globally, more than 2 billion cards are being issued. The amount of damage caused by lost and stolen cards is also increasing. In 2022, the global damage caused by fraudulent card use was approximately 30 billion dollars (about 38.685 trillion won), the company said.

There have been many attempts to apply high-security fingerprint authentication smart cards to the market to solve these problems. However, commercialization was difficult due to the cumbersome process of fingerprint registration.

The core technology developed by eTUNNEL this time is a technique that allows users to easily register their fingerprints on a fingerprint authentication smart card. It is being evaluated as a revolutionary technology that can solve the challenge of fingerprint registration methods at a low cost, according to a company official.

An eTUNNEL official said, “We attach a one-time fingerprint self-registration system to the issued fingerprint authentication smart card and deliver it to the user. The user can easily register their fingerprint without visiting a bank.” They added, “After registering the fingerprint, the fingerprint registration system can be simply removed for immediate use. We have also filed a patent for this technology.”

Moreover, the official stated, “We are pursuing collaboration with global giants that supply credit cards to Visa and MasterCard. We plan to establish a mass production system from 2024 after testing prototypes.”

eTUNNEL was previously selected as a supplier for biometric authentication access security cards for the United Nations International Telecommunication Union (ITU) employees.
