Many people dream of documenting their life adventures, or that of their parents. But the truth is, most people never record their memoirs because it simply takes too long to write it all down.
Now, a new service is launching onto the scene to change how people document their stories. VividMemoirs has launched the first online web service to make quick personal video biographies through a self-guided online interview, resulting in a professional documentary people can share with their family and friends.
Until now, it was primarily the wealthy who could afford to make video memoirs, hiring a documentary crew to film, edit, and style a personalized documentary. The total cost to make such a movie might be as high as $30,000, including things like hotel and travel costs for the film crew. Surprisingly, VividMemoirs is priced at just $99. It allows users to work at their own pace, answering video interview questions with the click of a button, from the comfort of their own homes. VividMemoirs’ algorithm stitches those video responses together with photos, music, chapter headers, and more – generating a professional documentary in about a week.
Jeanne Dimmick, the creator of VividMemoirs, spent years interviewing seniors in her role working for a retirement community. “I’d spend hours talking with folks, and they’d eventually share that they had spent 30 years in the CIA conducting overseas ops or playing central roles in major world events. One grandmother had travelled the world creating renowned department store window displays. I would ask them ‘Did you ever write these stories down?’ and they’d just shrug and say no. I felt like I had to find a way to make it easier for people to document their impact for the history books.”
Users receive a downloadable movie file they can share with friends and loved ones, or they can opt to buy keepsake editions. And if someone wants a written autobiography, they can purchase a transcript of their video answers; with a little editing, he or she can print their own hardbound autobiography.
One eager buyer stated, “I thought sure, I could pull out my phone and sit with my mom for hours trying to interview her, and then cut all that footage together myself, but this is so much easier! For the price, it was a no-brainer for me to pay for such an easy service to guide mom through it at her own pace.”
Dimmick states: “Imagine a future where a great-great grandmother’s VividMemoir is posted alongside her online family tree records, so that future generations of her family can listen to her share her experiences. For passing information down through the ages, I think video is the best way to make sure our legacies are remembered– in rich, vibrant color!”
