Skateboarding Fever: The Pandemic-Proof Phenomenon

If, in March 2020, somebody had told you that skateboarding would boom to become one of the most popular and fastest growing sports you may have thought there was a punchline still to come with that joke. A year on however, and with so many sports still unavailable to the general public, it’s a reality, and Skates.co.uk are more than ready to ride the tide.

The spike in preference for skateboarding is a worldwide phenomenon now, given the needs to adhere to the rules of the pandemic lockdown. From $157.6 million in 2020, the worldwide skateboard market size is expected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 2.0% during 2020-2026 and reach $177.4 million by 2026.

There was a time when it was perhaps expected that the pandemic would just blow over, however, the world has since adapted and we’re now equipped with better means to cope with the circumstances. Sports is no exception.

The Perfect Sport as the Lockdown Unfolds

As we stick to the official “stay at home” order till March 29, with only groups of six, or two households allowed to gather outdoors, skateboarding is just the solution that many in the UK are looking to.

Skates.co.uk have seen an unprecedented surge in the sales of skateboards and skateboarding accessories in the past 8 months. With rules instructing the majority of society to spend minimum possible time outside their homes, a hobby that can be enjoyed outside, either individually or as a socially distanced group, is perfect.

Whilst they have always advocated skateboarding for obvious reasons, this surge of interest in skating is perfectly logical in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, as Skates explain for themselves:

“People are mainly limited to their gardens or to their local parks for exercise and the rules allowing you out of your house just once a day creates a desire to choose an activity where you can maximise fun and the time spent outside. Skateboarding, gives you the leverage of playing alone and – at a time when people are trying to practice social distancing – this sport is the ideal option.”

Skates.co.uk also commented, “skateboarding is not only a great sport to be enjoyed alone but is also much safer than more traditional outdoor activities such as riding a bicycle or motorbike. Skateboards are also very popular because of their affordability – you can kit yourself out with a skateboard and protective equipment at minimal expense when compared to many other activities.”

It’s plain to see why the sales of skateboards have risen worldwide. With this kind of growth, we see it becoming the world’s pandemic sport
