Greg DeLine, Board President of Love INC, Goes Over The Edge to Raise Money

Columbia, Mo. – For the second year in a row, Love INC is asking Columbians “to rappel down to lift up” at Over The Edge, a rappelling event and fundraiser. The event will take place 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, September 28, 2019, at the Tiger Hotel in downtown Columbia.

Fundraisers become “Edgers” who receive professional instruction and equipment before rappelling 144 feet down the front side of the Tiger Hotel. The event will be at the center of the family-friendly event planning for inflatable slide, bounce house and food trucks.

This year’s lead Edgers include University of Missouri System President Dr. Mun Choi, Columbia Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Peter Stiepleman and Stephens College Vice President for Admission Dr. Brian Sajko.

“Love INC wants to build on the success of last year’s event and sign up 100 Edgers to raise more than $100,000,” said Greg DeLine, Love INC’s board president. Registering and donating is easy; click on the Over The Edge pop-up at Columbia Love INC. Edgers raise a minimum of $1,000 to participate.

“This is Love INC’s only public fundraiser, and it gives Columbians an opportunity to experience the thrill of rappelling and a chance to support Love INC, an organization that has helped more than 8,000 people out of poverty-related crises since 2008,” said DeLine. For a long time this organization has stayed in the shadows, quietly helping individuals and families in Columbia. Now it’s time to lift the covers off and help this group raise awareness, thank volunteers, and have some thrill-seeking fun!”

The mission of Love INC Columbia is to move people out of poverty. It takes a coordinated network-of-care approach, using relationships, resources and spiritual support. The organization has more than 150 trained volunteers who “walk alongside” those in crisis.

“Staff and volunteers listen without judgment to people’s stories, help them address challenges and partner with area churches and agencies to find hope,” said Mike DeSantis, mobilization director. “Resources and relationships are necessary to guide people to better futures. Many of our clients say the difference between achieving their goals and quitting were encouraging words from someone who was there to care for them.”

For people in need, Love INC offers these tips:

  • The first step is a conversation with trained staff at Love INC.

  • The staff at the Love INC clearinghouse will create an action plan with immediate steps.

  • Different people face different challenges. Love INC coaches help people create new habits that improve their lives.

  • Love INC’s information center stores more than 120 documents that can help people immediately to handle life’s issues, with Columbia-specific information about housing, employment and transportation.

  • Life’s necessities, such as a free cell phone, food assistance and even transportation options are available and provided by other local agencies. Learning how to budget, write a resume, or buy a home is much less stressful with a coach.

“It would be great to see 100 rappelers for this year’s Over The Edge event,” adds DeLine. “The event is a fun way to get involved, and I would love to see us beat last year’s funds raised.”
