The Evolution of Science and Psychology behind Perfecting the Lips of Each Individual

A decade ago, plastic surgery and virtually any cosmetic procedure was frowned upon and those who got them had a tendency to hide it and those who did open up about the procedures, were subjected to a shame-blame cycle. Today, the paradigm has shifted dramatically.

The reasons behind this are many; however most notable would be the power of the mainstream media to take once private and tabooed conversations about body image and improvements from behind closed doors. Then came social media, in particular the Instagram phenomenon which put the subject into the spotlight and broke down whatever stigma was left, while also building an open forum for discussion, experience sharing and questions which otherwise might not have happened.

On the other hand, the science and technology themselves evolved and became more accessible. This is in particular true for nonsurgical procedures, such as lip fillers, lip augmentation, lip injections, basically the entire array of dermal fillers.

17% of women want big, plump lips such as those popularised by celebrities

Chances are every other person passing by on the street or on the subway has had some type of dermal filler at some point in their lives. Injectables have seen a steady growth in popularity in the past five years. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic surgery says the increase percentage is estimated at around 40.6%.

This is in part because developers have advanced the science and moved the procedures from an expensive and inconvenient trip to a cosmetic surgeon’s office, to a quick, pleasant and accessible session at a medical spa or wellness centre. They have also eliminated the need of going under the knife which is appealing to so many people.

Probably the most famous example and the go-to example many use when seeking to improve the aspect of their lips is Kylie Jenner, the youngest of the Karadshians who is famous for her lip fillers. So famous that in fact, as many as 44% of women surveyed in a recent poll reveal to wanting the look of ‘Kylie Jenner’ lips, with another 17% says they appreciate the look of big, plump lips in general.

Boosting the appearance of lips is now part of the self-care package

The procedures are now approachable, and social media platforms such as Instagram makes them accessible to everyone, anywhere in the world in a matter of seconds. This has now turned lip fillers into a must-have in everyone’s self-care package, similar to how one would brush their teeth to keep them white or apply foundation.
