A national list of the top 20 Philly-Styled Cheesesteak sandwich shops created by the folks at critically-acclaimed Hank’s Root Beer for National Cheesesteak month. Root beer and the cheesesteak were both created in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia, PA – March 13, 2020 – Hank’s Gourmet Beverages, the Philadelphia-based concern that helped pioneer the craft soda boom in the 1990s with the introduction of its iconic Hank’s Original Root Beer, is marking March as Cheesesteak Month and National Cheesesteak Day, March 24, by proclaiming its choices for the Top 20 Philly-Styled Cheesesteak Spots in the nation.

“Root beer and cheesesteaks are the two most popular Philly creations, tasty sensations that are often paired not only at sandwich shops and restaurants here, but in many cities across America,” says Hank’s Beverage Company’s Chief Customer Officer Tony Salvatore.  “Putting this list together was delightfully hard work that has taken place over many years, miles and meals!  It’s the collective opinion of our executives, Philadelphia-based staff, our much-traveled sale force and many of our Hank’s aficionados who are diehard cheesesteak fanatics.”

Hank’s list includes some of most well-known and long-established cheesesteak eateries from the greater Philadelphia area, along with a few out-of-town entries that Salvatore describes as “good enough to run with our real pro sandwich shops right here in the City of Brotherly Love.”

Philadelphia-area entries in Hank’s Cheesesteak Top 20 include:  Campo’s Philly Cheesesteaks; Chickie’s & Pete’s; Chubby’s Steaks; Cleavers; Dalessandro’s Steaks; Hoagie Xpress; Mike’s BBQ; Monty’s Sandwich Shop; Old School Burgers; Philly Gourmet Steaks; Saads Halal Restaurant; SpOt Gourmet Burgers; Steam Pub; The Lunch Factory and Wit and Witout Philly Cheesesteaks.

The five out-of-town and award-winning spots that proved “good enough to be in Philly” include:  Big Tony’s West Philly (4 locations in Texas); Blue Cactus Grill (Fairfield and Norwalk, Connecticut); Philly’s Best (19 locations in Southern California); Philly Grill (3 locations in Florida) and Straight Outta Philly (Rockledge, Florida).

The roots of root beer go back to 1875 when it was created by a Philly pharmacist, who combined sassafras and other herbs, and later introduced the concoction commercially the following year as a drink at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition.

Philadelphia’s most iconic sandwich, the cheesesteak, is usually hot beef and melty cheese on a long flaky roll. Often imitated, the cheesesteak endures, whether served slathered with Cheez Whiz at a corner deli or dressed up with Kobe beef at an elegant restaurant or now in nonconformist plant-based and vegan varieties.  The cheesesteak was invented in 1930, when Pat Olivieri, a hot dog vendor and namesake to Pat’s King of Steaks, threw beef on his grill to make a sandwich. A passing cab driver asked for one, too, and soon Olivieri had a following.

Every March, the Philadelphia craft soda maker celebrates National Cheesesteak Month with special promotions at both top-rated sandwich shops in Philly, the birthplace of the cheesesteak, and hundreds of venues nationwide.  This year, Hank’s is offering 20 cheesesteak fanatics who can prove their love, in a tweet, essay or short video on its social platforms, a ride-along Hank’s Ultimate Cheesesteak Crawl.  This is a progressive culinary dining experience that will whisk them by private motor coach to a host of the city’s best sandwich shops to mark the sandwich-based holiday, March 24, a tantalizing subset culled from Hank’s First Annual list of Philly’s Top 20 Cheesesteak Shops.
