The Types and applications of deep hole drilling machines

deep hole drilling machine is a metal cutting machine designed to make very deep, precise holes in almost any metal. Deep hole drills enable the performance of specific tools such as BTA and gun drill to optimize the deep hole drilling process for manufacturers. The machine is designed to integrate the technology used by these tools and optimize all aspects of the process to drill deep holes accurately, reliably, and efficiently.

Deep hole drills are ideal for deep holes of various sizes and production levels, and are necessary for holes with a depth to diameter ratio of about 20:1 or greater. Dedicated deep hole drilling rigs provide tool support, coolant delivery, and process feedback, enabling manufacturers to achieve their deep hole drilling goals. Compared with CNC machining centers, these features optimize the process and prioritize deep hole drilling methods, by reducing cycle time, stabilizing tools, evacuation of chips, preventing tool breakage and process failures.

Types of deep hole drilling machines

There are two main types of tools used to produce deep holes, gun drills and BTA drills. The requirements of these tools determine the design and system of the deep hole drilling machine using them. In some cases, BTA and orifice processes can be combined with coolant and tool change technology on one machine.

Sandblast drilling is usually used for deep holes with a diameter of 1mm (0.040) to 50mm (2.00 in), while BTA drilling can be used for deep holes with a diameter of 20mm (0.80 in) to 250mm (10 in) or even larger.
