The global DSRC Market is estimated to surpass $167.1 million mark by 2026 growing at an estimated CAGR of more than 3.7% during the forecast period 2021 to 2026. Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) technology is a two-way wireless communication protocol intended for swift transfer of information between various elements of transportation systems that includes automobiles and roadside infrastructure. Low Latency & High Reliability are among the key features of DSRC making it suitable for safety and transaction applications in mobility systems. Due to its enormous potential, US-DOT issued a proposed rule in December 2016 mandating installation of DSRC (5.9GHz) on light-duty vehicles. This mandate will prove to be a significant milestone in the development of V2V ecosystem in the country. If such implementation is successful in attaining safety objectives, a breakthrough will be witnessed in DSRC adoption across the regions developing Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The sheer possibility of volume-based implementation in both light and heavy-duty vehicles is providing impetus to the creation of competent value chain for DSRC with several participating stakeholders offering a wide range of products and solutions
DSRC Market Segment Analysis – By Frequency Band
DSRC technology is operated under two frequency bands namely ‘5.8GHz and 5.9GHz’. 5.8GHz frequency band has been in use pre-dominantly for Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) in European Union and Japan. 5.9GHz frequency band is being researched extensively for Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communications by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) in order to curtail the road casualties. Electronic Toll Collection in Europe is predominantly carried out by 5.8GHz technology that are opted for both single-lane and multi-lane environments. Companies providing 5.8GHz transceivers for DSRC market comprise of Kapsch TrafficCom, Norbit Group, Q-free among others. 5.8GHz technology is based on CEN standards and UNI-10607 standard that defines layers 1,2 and 7
DSRC Market Segment Analysis – By Application
Overall, the applications of DSRC can be categorized under two segments: Safety & Convenience. Safety applications involving both V2V & V2I communication are concerned with alerting drivers to imminent hazards associated with automobiles while ‘convenience applications’, a sub-aspect of V2I communication, deals with ETC and Electronic Parking services. The utilization for DSRC has been in place for more than a decade, primarily in Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) & Road Congestion systems across various regions. To an extent, DSRC market in such systems has already achieved a saturation with several regulating authorities in various countries vying for competing technologies including GNSS, Cellular, Infrared & ANPR as opposed to DSRC. But still, a huge opportunity for DSRC lies untapped in the form of V2V communication. During the last several years, the focus of different transportation authorities has been centered around occupant safety. A significant chunk of R&D in automotive industry has been revolving around ‘Vehicle Awareness’ to address the issue of safety. Through this, stakeholders are striving to transform vehicle into a mobile communicating node working in tandem with other vehicles and roadside infrastructure

DSRC Market Segment Analysis – By Geography
DSRC technology deployment, as well as its application, varies with respect to every region across the globe. For North America region, DSRC technology will cater its application towards safety solutions and has already been proposed as a mandate. Research studies are on-going in the U.S. for more than a decade with the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) acting as a nodal body while other stakeholders offering necessary support in order to implement a successful V2V communication technology. Europe, an early adopter of DSRC for road pricing systems is also analyzed to create a sustainable Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) around 5.9GHz DSRC technology only due to the presence of an appropriate market ecosystem. Asia-Pacific (APAC), with China, Japan & Singapore supporting DSRC for toll collection and different traffic management techniques corresponding to differential pricings are the leading marketplace for chipset and DSRC equipment suppliers.
DSRC Market Drivers
Growing Safety Concerns amidst Up Surging Road Casualties
In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of collisions of vehicles in many countries. Several applications are being developed for vehicle monitoring activities with the arising need to reduce vehicle crashes. DSRC play a major role in enhancing the safety of the vehicles by providing communication on both V2V and V2I networks. Vehicles are embedded with DSRC on-board units which are effective for all the vehicle range including passenger and commercial vehicles in order to facilitate this communication. Vehicles and Infrastructure act as communicating nodes. This V2V and V2I communication reduces vehicle collisions and improves time and fuel efficiency with the signals given to the driver generated by the DSRC equipment.
Adoption of Smart Digital Tachograph in Commercial Vehicles
The digital tachograph is a more secure and accurate recording and storage device than the analogue tachograph. This device records different activities of a vehicle, for example distance, speed and driving times and rest periods of the driver. The system includes a printer for use in road side inspections and the driver has a card incorporating a microchip, which he must insert into the tachograph when he takes control of the vehicle. DSRC technology in Digital tachograph system are deployed to support vehicle filtering during road controls while assisting the control personnel to take decision whether to stop or not stop the vehicle, thus enhancing the efficiency and throughput of control operations. Increase in deployment of smart digital tachograph will result in the growth of DSRC market.
DSRC Market Challenges
Spectrum Sharing an Impediment to Effective DSRC Implementation
Though DSRC spectrum (5.8GHz and 5.9GHz bands) was set aside for use in vehicle and transportation systems, government is trying to open more spectrum for wireless communication ecosystem for which DSRC is not an exception. Wireless technology companies have been exploring various frameworks to enable ITS and general-purpose communications to share 5.9GHz band. The major concern for 5.9Ghz spectrum is its allocation to Wi-Fi on sharing basis, which may cause unnecessary interference in safety communications. Qualcomm made a proposal for distributing up the spectrum for safety and non-safety applications, instead of sharing entire bands for Wi-Fi. According to re-channelization plan, safety-of-life applications would be utilizing top 30Mhz of 5.9GHz band and non-safety-of-life applications would be provided with lower 45MHz of the band. The automakers have currently supported such distribution but as demand for Wi-Fi connected devices increase manifold, violation of such distribution looks possible in next few years.
DSRC Market Landscape
Product launches, acquisitions, and R&D activities are key strategies adopted by players in the DSRC Market. Cohda Wireless, Kapsch, Arada Systems, Savari, Q-Free, Denso, Norbit, Efkon & Autostrad are considered to be the key players of the DSRC Market.
Acquisitions/Technology Launches/Partnerships
Savari and Econolite Group entered into a partnership agreement to accelerate deployment of advanced V2I systems, autonomous systems and smart cities with the distribution of Savari’s StreetWAVE RSU’s to Americas, Middle East and Africa
Autotalks made partnership with Royalteks to improve road safety by developing an innovative solution for vehicle to pedestrian (V2P) use case.
