Ryan Kavanaugh, highly considered one of the most prominent figures in Hollywood and media, has announced the return of boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya through his latest platform Triller Fight Club, a PPV platform connected to the social media app, Triller.
De La Hoya, an Olympic gold medalist and five-division champion, has been retired from boxing since 2008. He will fight former UFC champion Vitor Belfort at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on September 11, 2021. Unlike Triller Fight Club’s massively viewed Mike Tyson-Roy Jones Jr. exhibition bout back in 2020, the De La Hoya fight will be a sanctioned fight, and will officially count against De La Hoya’s record.
“It’s important to transition from exhibitions,” Kavanaugh said, “[…]This is as real as any fight Oscar or Belfort has had, not some staged wrestling event.”
De La Hoya has voiced his agreement in the desire to make his return to boxing official, saying, “I decided if I was coming back, it was for real, none of this exhibition stuff.”
Since retiring, De La Hoya has mainly focused on his company Golden Boy Promotions, which represents somes of today’s biggest names in boxing. Belfort, who will be boxing for the second time in his career with a 1-0 record, is partnering with Triller Fight Club to make a transition to boxing from MMA fighting.
The match, which has been approved by the California State Athletic Commission, will consist of eight two-minute rounds at 180 lbs, and is contingent on both fighters passing a multitude of medical tests required for fighters over the age of 40. De La Hoya and Belfort are ages 48 and 44, respectively.

About Triller and Triller Fight Club
Triller is a video editing and sharing app acquired by Kavanaugh’s company Proxima Media in 2019, and is considered the second-largest digital entertainment and music platform next to TikTok. Triller is unique in its licensing partnerships, which allows users to have broader access to the music that they can use and share, and in turn create profit for users, labels and artists alike.
Additionally, Kavanaugh’s restructuring of the app’s monetizations allows influencers and content creators to earn money directly from fans and advertisers. Though Triller’s usership expanded quickly with Kavanaugh’s guidance, the news of former President Donald Trump’s threats to ban the use of TikTok in the U.S. encouraged creators and advertisers to begin to take their content elsewhere, and resulted in an explosion of growth for Triller.
In 2020 Triller expanded its platform to include the production of livestreamed PPV events, including Triller Fight Club, which Kavnaugh began partnered with rapper Snoop Dogg, and combines high-profile boxing matches, musical acts, and other celebrities into large-scale events.
The Mike Tyson-Roy Jones Jr. fight, dubbed “Tyson on Triller”, took in over 1 million PPV buys, and musical acts such as Lil Wayne and Wiz Khalifa brought in a new generation of fans to see the return of Mike Tyson to the ring. Kavanaugh has also had a hand in promoting YouTuber and promising boxing newcomer Jake Paul. His match against MMA fighter Ben Askren on the platform took in 1.45 million PPV buys, and the Triller Fight Club events have taken in over $100 million in revenue so far.
