Dr. Elizabeth A. Carter Out to Empower African Americans to Take on More Leadership Roles

Reports show that only eight percent of the country’s African American population have jobs in management or better. And while some might embrace that as a norm, one motivational speaker and trainer, Dr. Elizabeth A. Carter, refuses to let it slide. Accordingly, she now has a mission to empower more African Americans, especially women, to become leaders in their organizations.

“I’m looking to break the eight percent,” as Dr. Elizabeth would put it. “And what’s helping me to achieve that is my absolute passion for performance, engagement, analytics, and leadership.”

Dr. Carter is the founder and owner of the company AAPPEAL, a training and career development more specifically designed to meet the needs of minorities who want to experience professional growth. It services a slew of small businesses, non-profits, and individual professionals in Delaware, Pennsylvania and other neighboring areas by providing training programs, tools, and resources to help them surpass their goals.

The child of a Caribbean man and a Southern woman, Dr. Elizabeth grew up in hardship. She learned that she would have to work harder and smarter to gain people’s respect and get out of their old way of life and experience significant upgrades from an early age. Today, she has achieved that and more, although she has had to make many sacrifices to get to where she is today.

As a leader in the finance and performance space, Elizabeth has gained extensive experience in financial analysis, performance improvement, relationship management, and talent development. She has created a strong influence in both the for-profit and the non-profit world, as she often volunteers for worthy causes. Apart from running AAPPEAL, Dr. Carter is also the Director of Finance for one of the most successful health insurance organizations in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She is also a speaker, trainer, bestselling author, and career coach. In the last twenty-five years, she has built a case that minority women can thrive in the professional world, too, no matter what background one comes from.

Dr. Elizabeth A Carter also serves on multiple non-profit boards and holds a distinguished PhD in Education focusing on training and performance improvement from Capella University. She also has an MS in Education, an MBA in Management, and a BBA in marketing.

Today, she is determined to do more than show that it can happen for African Americans. She wants to teach people how to experience the same success levels despite issues like poor social support and even cases of systemic racism. She currently runs a coaching program called V.O.C.A.L. The training looks to help participants move away from “playing it safe” in their careers and teach them to spot and take control of the right opportunities at the right time.

“Having leadership qualities all my life, I understand the challenges in maneuvering through life trying to fit in,” shares Elizabeth. “There weren’t leaders that looked like me to tell me the truth, so I wanted to be that person for others.” By inspiring others to take control of their professional path, she hopes to move the needle and see a more significant percentage of African American women and other members of minority groups take on managerial, directorial, and even higher leadership levels in companies all across the nation.
