Studies have shown that someone looking to commit a home robbery will almost always choose to go for the easiest target available. However, there are various ways homeowners can ensure their house doesn’t become a prime target.
For example, most people know to have their mail stopped or arrange for someone else to pick it up if they are away on vacation and not let newspapers or other deliveries pile up on the front porch. This is because that is a clear sign to a prospective thief that no one is at home and likely won’t be home very soon. Another popular choice is to have someone house it, but that isn’t always an option. One thing that’s been shown over and over again to help deter crime is proper lighting.
“Lighting only works if it’s done right. Leaving lights on day and night doesn’t actually help deter burglars. They will often check out a neighborhood before deciding if it’s worth the risk to them, so they will know those lights never turn on or off. Security lights are a good way around that.” Said a spokesperson.
Professionals recommend installing security lighting that is either motion detected or can be turned on and off. Along with that, lights that need to be consistent should have daytime censors. By installing wall-mounted lights that have sensors to turn off during the daytime and combining that with motion sensors, it’s less likely that potential thieves will see the house as an easy mark.
“Security and outdoor lighting can put a homeowner’s mind at ease. Not only does it help keep them from being easy targets, but it can also make them feel safer when they are coming home, and it’s dark. Furthermore, outdoor lighting makes it much more difficult for a would-be attacker to sneak up on someone as they get home from a night out.” The Spokesperson added.
Electrical wiring isn’t a DIY project for the average homeowner. Electrical can be extremely dangerous and can result in severe injury or death if they do not know what they are doing. In addition, electrical projects can be confusing and simple mistakes like not correctly making a connection can lead to enormous consequences like a house fire.
Some codes and standards have to be taken into account when it comes to electrical projects. Professionals will know what those are and what needs to be inspected before use, and what doesn’t. It is highly recommended to consult with a certified electrician before making any updates or changes to a home.
