Across the United States and around the globe, millions of people struggle with drug and alcohol misuse. While the world has been focusing on ending the global pandemic, many individuals are reevaluating how they’ve been coping and if changes need to be made on a personal level.
This quarter, CheckUp & Choices discusses its ‘A Good News Series’ blog, which is aimed at education, prevention, and empowerment. They also discuss alcohol and drug recovery and its relation to clinically-validated digital wellness programs.
Recovering from Alcohol and Drug Misuse: A Good News Series Blog
As a new ongoing series of blog posts, the ‘Good News Series’ is set to highlight “good news” that happens when people evaluate and change their relationship with alcohol and drugs.
Each issue will feature the different aspects of recovery all connected to having a healthier relationship with drugs and alcohol. From improved family and romantic relationships to career advancements and better physical, emotional, and spiritual health, this series is for those struggling with hope for a better future.
In the first issue, for example, we focus on research conducted by Drs. David Eddie, John Kelly, and their colleagues, which shows an 80% improvement in interactions with family members, economic engagement, and/or self-improvement for those who actively resolved their drinking or drug issues.
The issue also reveals information that shows time in recovery is associated with continued improvement in quality of life, self-esteem, and happiness.
The blog series acts as not only an informational resource, but a source of inspiration, empowering others to take back control of their lives and unshackle themselves from the burden of alcohol and substance misuse.
Using Science, Technology, and Data to Address Substance Misuse
CheckUp & Choices realizes that technology presents a unique opportunity to reach a diverse and broad audience. With alcohol killing more people annually than drugs, and with nearly 25% of mental health clients engaging in hazardous alcohol use, the potential impact of helping these individuals is tremendous.
Backed by more than 35 years of experience, the company employs research-based and clinically validated methodologies proven to deliver results. Peer-reviewed research papers, randomized clinical trials, and protocols evaluated by industry-leading organizations and scientists are at the heart of CheckUp & Choices’ program design.
About CheckUp & Choices
Co-founded in 2015 by Reid K. Hester, Ph.D, CheckUp & Choices is a confidential, evidence-based digital program created to assist those who want to assess their drinking and/or substance use habits through a series of questionnaires and personalized solutions. The company creates evidence-based digital programs that provide non-judgmental feedback and self-guided protocols which empower people to reduce or stop alcohol and substance use.
Backed by clinical studies, scientific research, and support from a number of NIH NIAAA grants, its programs have been validated as an effective intervention.
According to Dr. Hester, director of CheckUp & Choices’ research division, “From the start, we had a vision to have an integrated protocol for people that would be soup to nuts,” offering to “help them resolve ambivalence.” Dr. Hester goes on to say that “people who are unsure whether their drinking is a problem can engage in a process that can help them resolve their ambivalence and then help them identify the triggers, and guide change-plans to deal with them.”
