 Epidemic Keratoconjunctivitis Overview

Conjunctivitis (pink eye) is an inflammation or infection of the transparent membrane (conjunctiva) that lines the eyelid and covers the white part of the eyeball. When small blood vessels in the conjunctiva become inflamed, they become more visible, and this is what causes the whites of the eyes to appear reddish or pink. Pink eye is commonly caused by a bacterial or viral infection, an allergic reaction, or – in babies – an incompletely opened tear duct. Viral infections cause nearly 80% of all conjunctivitis cases. Many different viruses, such as adenovirus, which typically leads to the common cold, can be the source of infection. Viral conjunctivitis spreads easily via a touch from person to person, making outbreaks common.

 Epidemic Keratoconjunctivitis Epidemiology Insight

  • Epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) is a highly contagious viral conjunctivitis. It is caused by a group of viruses known as adenoviruses that, in addition to ocular surface infections, are responsible for causing infectious diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and respiratory system illnesses such as the common cold virus. EKC has a long incubation period and is highly contagious, leading to large outbreaks worldwide.
  • The total incident cases of EKC in the 7MM in 2021 were  ~1,821,000. These cases are expected to increase during the forecast period [2022–2032].
  • According to DelveInsight’s analysis, in the 7MM, the Japan reported the highest incident cases of EKC, i.e., ~993,000, in the year 2021.
  • Among the EU-5 countries, the highest number of cases (incident) of EKC were in Germany, i.e. ~86,000 cases in the year 2021.
  • The total incident cases of EKC in the United States in 2021 were ~503,000. These cases are expected to increase during the forecast period [2022–2032].
  • Among the EU-5 countries, the lowest number of cases of EKC were observed in Spain, i.e. ~48,000 cases in the year 2021.

 Epidemic Keratoconjunctivitis Market Outlook

Epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) is a self-limiting, infectious, viral, and highly contagious ocular condition that starts unilaterally and later develops into a bilateral condition. Adenovirus is the causative agent for this infection. During EKC infection, a patient has symptoms of both keratitis and conjunctivitis simultaneously. Some typical signs of EKC include conjunctival hyperemia/erythema (redness) of bulbar conjunctiva and/or palpebral conjunctiva; epithelial keratitis; chemosis (conjunctival edema); photophobia; foreign body sensation, etc. Other than these ocular symptoms, some of the systemic symptoms associated with EKC are lymphadenopathy (swollen lymph nodes, specifically the preauricular lymph nodes); fever; headache; and fatigue.
