Not all goblins are bad, as stated by Michelle Groot, the author of Ryen Ryen The Hemogoblin. This beautiful story of a supposed Hemogoblin is inspired by the author’s nephew, who was diagnosed with stage four metastatic melanoma and sadly passed away at the age of 23. He tried his best to fight through this and used to get blood transfusions to help with his extremely low hemoglobin levels. The child proudly referred to himself as a Hemogoblin.
Ryen Ryen The Goblin’s story starts off with him helping a child who falls off a tree and needs a little blood to get him up on his feet and healed quickly. The child is young at age and intimidated by the blood transfusion but is calmed by the words,
“I know you are afraid, trust me you can do scary things anyway!”
Once the child hears these words, he goes through with the process and is on a better path to health. The second story is about a girl who needs a little blood to get her energy back. She does not want to sit and sulk, but wants to see the world. She continues to get a blood transfusion which helps her gain her energy back. Through both of these incidents, the Hemogoblin Ryen Ryen is able to help. He calms and soothes the children down and gives them courage.
If you have a child who is sick and needs motivation, you should consider giving them this book. They can remember Ryen Ryen’s comforting words and get done with things that come along with sickness and can be intimidating for children. Help your child find strength through characters such as these and fight through the pain. Such books can give children hope and a friend to believe in.
