‘Black Boy Hair Joy’ from Sugar Cookie Books Normalizes Black Boys’ Hair

Author, lawyer, and mom Tiffany Obeng is boosting the confidence of Black boys everywhere with new children’s book

Sugar Cookie Books’ founder Tiffany Obeng recognized that there are many books celebrating Black girls’ hair but not many doing the same for Black boys. Her young son had been teased at school for his “curly hair”, and Obeng knew she wanted to do something to change how Black boys see their hair. Now, she’s released a new book, ‘Black Boy Hair Joy’, which offers an anthem for celebrating Black boys and their hair with rhyming text and vibrant, colorful illustrations.

“I wanted a book that related to our young Black boys, was fun for our young Black boys to read, and affirmed to young Black boys that they matter and are perfect just as they are,” said Obeng, who has authored several children’s books that promote equality within the Black community.

Obeng notes that there are many headlines about young Black boys being attacked and ridiculed for their hair, and there have also been instances of school disciplinary action over their hair. In one glaring example that took place over the summer, a Black high school student in Texas received in-school suspension for his hairstyle. This comes as a breach of the Texas CROWN Act, which took effect on September 1, 2023, and outlaws discrimination based on hairstyles.

Obeng wrote her new children’s book as a way to stop this cycle and instill a sense of self-esteem and self-love in Black boys.

‘Black Boy Hair Joy’ features charming imagery of Black boys wearing common haircuts, along with chants and lyrical lines. Obeng hopes to see her newest children’s book grace barber shops catering to Black boys, and she’d even be open to partnering with hair care brands focusing on Black boys.

“I hope to one day hear Black boys worldwide recite lines from the book with a wide smile,” said Obeng.

‘Black Boy Hair Joy’ is now available via the Sugar Cookie Books website, as well as through Amazon. Learn more about this new book, as well as others from Obeng, at https://www.sugarcookiebooks.com.
