SELMA, AL – Entrepreneur and author Krystal Allen is known for her creative philanthropy and giving back, particularly within the southeastern United States. The CEO and founder of K. Allen Consulting is known for gifting free breakfasts to school custodians, bus drivers, and support staff to surprising her entire staff with Beyoncé Renaissance tickets, Krystal has been constantly finding ways to give and do for others for nearly two decades. For Christmas, the Selma, Alabama native is spreading the holiday cheer to the ones closest to her, her mom and dad, with a gift she’s been dreaming of being able to do since she was a young girl. She made them first-time homeowners at the age of 60 years old and took care of their mortgage altogether so they’d never have a payment to make a day in their lives.
On Christmas Eve, Allen traveled to her hometown of Selma, Alabama to surprise her parents with a beautiful historic home, making them the first Black homeowners of this particular property within the city’s historic district and first time homeowners at that.
“This was not only symbolic as a first-generation college student, but also for the racial history of Selma knowing that a young Black woman purchased the type of property that many years ago we would have only been allowed to clean or serve within,” says Allen about the purchase.
To keep it a surprise, Allen created a fake open house event with the help of her hometown realtor, Dr. Jasmine Robinson. Her parents were under the impression that she would be showing the home to potential homebuyers. However, the open house turned out to be the actual reveal of the property as their brand-new home.
“My mom thought that she would be helping with the food and my realtor brought “for sale” and “open house” signs and my dad thought he was there only to answer questions that people have on the property and as it turns out, they learned it was actually theirs,” says Allen.
Allen, a first-generation college graduate and Selma native, has been saving for years to make her parents first-time homebuyers. She purchased the 2-story, 4-bedroom, and 4-bathroom home last November 2022 and has spent the last year renovating it. This past January, the home was partially demolished by a massive tornado that hit this small town. Over the past year, Allen hired her father, who is a carpenter to take the lead on all of the renovations as head contractor to rebuild it, never knowing that the property he was working on would be his very own.
“I’m just happy for them to have a home of their own like this, no mortgage payment to ever think of, and enjoy the rest of their lives knowing how hard their work over the years has paid off because they deserve this,” she says. “This is a beautiful, real-life Christmas story.”
